Dramatic weight loss is no longer relegated to TV specials and single-page spreads in fitness magazines; there are entire, multi-season shows centered around the transformation of morbidly obese Americans. So I can’t blame you if you’re wondering why you should watch yet another story about someone who went from fat and sick to thin and healthy; you’ve probably seen that story before. But what’s interesting about Joe Cross’ new documentary, Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead is that he didn’t make a spectacle of his belly for a paycheck (as an investor and owner of Jaymsea Investments Pty Ltd., he has far more efficient means of drumming up cash). He did it to spread the message of green juice and better health. Cross, an Australian investor and enterpreneur, began with the simple mission to get off his meds and lose a problematic amount of extra weight (his inflated belly on the cover of the DVD is only half of it; he also suffered from a rare autoimmune disease that required large daily doses of prescription drugs to control). To get his weight down and try to get off his meds, he went on a 60-day juice fast – not for the faint of heart – and took the show on the road, literally driving 3,000 miles through the U.S. (This was his way of tackling his love of American food head-on, he says; it also makes for more interesting footage than driving through miles of the outback with a juicer would.) He talks to Americans about his fast and even recruits a couple of them to try it with him for a week; inspiring some to drastically change their eating habits and improve their health. Kris Carr, drinking green juice with Dr. Oz. He’s not the first to tout green juice as a cure-all for obesity and disease. Kris Carr , of Crazy Sexy Cancer fame, just published her first health guide, Crazy Sexy Diet; among her several prescriptions for improved health is a strong pitch for drinking green juice every day. “Green juice is my muse,” and “Make Juice, Not War,” are among her favorite slogans. But unlike most green juice proponents, Cross is really on a mission to take good health to the masses; he literally stands in front of McDonald’s and sits with families in diners to tell them about his fast. If you’re already a fan of juicing and whole foods, I’d still encourage you to watch it: You may not learn anything new about nutrition, or the obesity epidemic, but you’ll definitely come away feeling inspired to sip green juice and stay away from burgers and fries (something that I can’t say about Top Chef, my other favorite evening entertainment).
