Ways to Make Your Child Smarter

Though intelligence is definitely genetic in many ways, it can be nurtured by the right environment and stimuli. In other words, you can help stimulate your child’s mind to make your kid smarter. Image: istockphoto Play video games And you thought video games made kids brain dead! Well it depends on which games they play. Look for games that encourage strategy, planning and creativity. Offer music lessons According to a University of Toronto study , the more years a child takes music lessons, the better grades he’ll achieve in high school and the higher IQ he will have as an adult. Serve healthy food options Foods that are high in sugar and/or trans fats and low in other nutrients should be avoided. Give your children plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean meats, whole grains and other healthy options. High-nutrient foods improve children’s motor skills and mental development, particularly in the first few years of life. Be sure they have plenty of iron, which encourages brain tissue development. And serve your child gets a healthy breakfast every morning to improve their concentration and ability to learn. Play mind games Encourage children to play mind games such as chess, Sudoku, crossword puzzles, cryptograms, and even simple riddles when they are younger. These games promote logic, strategic thinking, decision making and problem solving. Read! Read! Read! Even when your kids are too young to read themselves, read to them.
